IT’S not a Biblical quotation nor does it refer to the best time of the afternoon for a tea break. A cryptic piece of graffiti which turned up on the side of the Gazette building in Phoenix Lane recently has puzzled a few passers-by.

The numbers 4:20 were sprayed on the side wall of Raymond Penny House which the Gazette shares with other businesses including Ostoe and Physio.

For those in the know, the numbers are a reference to drug culture with 4:20 popular among cannabis users because of his connection to April 20th, a counter-culture day among North American marijuana users who write the date as 4:20.

Some of the events held in America are focused on political messages around the legalization of cannabis but 4:20 has been adopted as a phrase associated with use of the drug in many other countries.

It is not the first time in recent weeks that Tiverton has been part of the debate over legal issues surrounding the drug.

Earlier this month, a plant thought to be cannabis was found growing in the town centre at the junciton of Bampton Street and Newport Street. Once alerted to the existence of the plant, a Tiverton PCSO removed it, however it subsequently emerged the plant was actual industrial hemp with no psychoactive properties.

The seeds were planted by pressure group Feed the Birds which campaigns to distribute legal hemp seeds across the UK.
